Forever Security: a web-planted AGENTS.md in ~/Downloads hijacked Codex into installing npm malware in 90%+ of tests; a CLAUDE.md variant leaks Claude Code OAuth tokens about half the time

On Oct 22, Forever Security researchers Gal Weizman and Omer Samet reported that they had stopped Codex on a real customer machine as it tried to install the known-malicious npm package function-color, following an AGENTS.md in ~/Downloads the customer had never seen. A web page can drop a file into Downloads with no click, and an agent started there obeys it. In their reproduction Codex rewrote the machine-wide ~/.codex/config.toml to register a malicious MCP server in more than 90% of attempts; a CLAUDE.md they crafted made Claude Code point ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL at an attacker server and leak its OAuth token about half the time. The researchers say there is no vendor bug to patch; The Hacker News and others covered it on Oct 26.

Key Takeaways

  • Real case: a 13 KB AGENTS.md disguised as engineering guidelines sat in a customer's ~/Downloads and told Codex to install the malicious package function-color (since removed by npm)
  • Codex path: it appends a project-tools MCP server to the machine-wide ~/.codex/config.toml, then spawns a child codex exec with --dangerously-bypass-approvals-and-sandbox; it worked in over 90% of tests and the server then loads in every session on the machine
  • Claude Code path: a CLAUDE.md gets ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL written into .claude/settings.json about 50% of the time, leaking the OAuth token on every request; about a fifth of the time it also reached code execution in the same session
  • Forever's telemetry shows about half of customers run a coding agent inside Downloads, and about a quarter of agent sessions open a real browser
  • Advice: never start an agent in Downloads, read AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md files you did not write, check agent configs for unknown MCP servers or API endpoints, keep approvals and sandboxes on, and rotate tokens if you find one (write-up)

Chainguard ships four MCP servers so coding agents verify images, APKs, EOL status and policy live—server-side governance instead of prompt guardrails

On 2026-10-14 Chainguard announced four MCP servers for agent supply-chain checks, generally available to enterprise customers: cg-oci (image manifests/SBOMs/provenance), cg-apk (Wolfi package equivalents), cg-versions (upstream releases and EOL), and cg-api (org policy and attestations). Any MCP client (Claude Code, Cursor, and others) connects via OAuth; pagination and response caps are enforced server-side so agents stop hallucinating tags or recommending EOL packages. Complements the same-day Harness/Checks/Workspaces launch by wiring dependency choices to live product data.

Chainguard ships four MCP servers so coding agents verify images, APKs, EOL status and policy live—server-side governance instead of prompt guardrails

Key Takeaways

  • Four endpoints: https://cgr.dev/mcp, apk.cgr.dev/mcp, versions.cgr.dev/mcp, console-api.enforce.dev/mcp over Streamable HTTP + OAuth 2.0
  • Live data: image SBOM/provenance, Debian→Wolfi package mapping, upstream EOL history, org policy/advisories—not model memory
  • Governance: server-side pagination (~25–50 default, 200 max) and response caps; cg-api hides tools your token cannot use
  • Headless: chainctl auth login --audience=<mcp-url> plus a headersHelper Bearer injector avoids Claude Code's ~1h OAuth re-login loop
  • Extras: docs MCP at mcp.edu.chainguard.dev (no sign-in); Skills MCP at skills.cgr.dev/mcp for on-demand hardening skills

Sierra and Meta announce Personal Agent Protocol, an open OAuth-based standard (with Shopify, Stripe, Walmart and more) for how personal AI agents work with businesses

On 2026-10-06 Sierra co-founders Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor announced Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard Meta and Sierra are developing with Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart. Built on OAuth, it lets a personal agent discover what a business offers, start a guest session, then act with user-granted read-only or write access via the company's website, APIs (MCP/OpenAPI) or its own agent. A v0.1 spec, design workshops and a reference implementation are planned for later in October; payments are a future extension.

MCP TypeScript @modelcontextprotocol/server 2.1.0: request-time OAuth scopeChallenge + 4 MiB body cap

The official MCP TypeScript SDK shipped @modelcontextprotocol/[email protected] on 2026-09-23 (npm). Headline: request-time scopeChallenge callbacks on tools, resources, resource templates, and prompts that return the exact scope set for an insufficient_scope challenge; createMcpHandler and Streamable HTTP answer HTTP 403 before handler/SSE setup. Patches add a default 4 MiB request body limit and JSON-RPC batch cap of 100, treat request id 0 as a real id, stop sending notifications/cancelled for initialize, and enforce Mcp-Name on modern tasks routes. For Agent gateways wiring MCP to OAuth resource servers, this is a permissions + DoS hardening minor.

Vercel mcp-handler 2.2.0 adds experimental WebMCP for in-browser agents

@AverageAiBro notes Vercel mcp-handler 2.2.0 (github.com/vercel-labs/mcp-handler) ships experimental WebMCP: opt tools in under experimental_webMcp, load ?webmcp-script from your MCP endpoint, and in-browser agents reuse the same server tools proxied as the signed-in user—no second browser OAuth stack. Pin 2.2.0; the WebMCP path is still experimental.

Key Takeaways

  • One MCP endpoint plus ?webmcp-script lets in-browser agents call your existing tools.
  • Calls proxy as the signed-in user, so auth tools skip a second browser OAuth flow.
  • WebMCP is still experimental—pin mcp-handler 2.2.0 for now.
