Gemini API Deprecates Gemini 2.5 Pro and 2.5 Flash: From December 1, Requests Auto-Route to 3.8 Flash and 3.5 Flash-Lite at the New Models' Rates

In its November 2 Gemini API changelog, Google deprecated gemini-2.5-pro and gemini-2.5-flash and removed both from the Google AI Studio model picker. From December 1, 2026, requests to gemini-2.5-pro will automatically route to gemini-3.8-flash and requests to gemini-2.5-flash to gemini-3.5-flash-lite, billed at the new models' rates. Google flags breaking API changes: stricter function calling and thought_signature validation, thinking_level replacing thinking_budget, and removal of sampling parameters such as temperature and of prefilled model turns. The model string stays valid but behavior can change, so developers should switch model strings and rerun tests before December 1.

Key Takeaways

  • Deadline: from December 1, 2026, gemini-2.5-pro routes to gemini-3.8-flash and gemini-2.5-flash routes to gemini-3.5-flash-lite; API access to 2.5 Pro is already limited to existing users who actively used it.
  • Price change (official price list, per 1M tokens): 2.5 Pro is $1.25 input / $10.00 output for prompts up to 200k; 3.8 Flash is an introductory $0.75 / $3.75 through 2026, rising to $1.50 / $7.50 on January 1, 2027.
  • 2.5 Flash and 3.5 Flash-Lite both cost $0.30 input / $2.50 output for text, while audio input drops from $1.00 to $0.30.
  • The migration guide says to replace thinking_budget with thinking_level (3.8 Flash has no minimal level), drop temperature/top_p/top_k, candidate_count and prefilled model turns, and include call_id and name in every FunctionResponse.
  • It follows the October deprecation of 3.7 Flash, another case of an old model string silently routing to a newer model; 2.5 Pro users will actually land on a Flash-tier model.

OpenAI rolls out GPT-6 Rosalind Research, a GPT-6 generation life sciences model for approved research orgs in Work, Codex and the API at $15/$75 per million tokens

In its October 30 ChatGPT Business release notes, OpenAI said GPT-6 Rosalind Research is rolling out to a limited set of customers with Research approval. It shows up in the model picker in ChatGPT Work and Codex, not in the Chat tab, and separately approved organizations can call it through the API as gpt-6-rosalind. OpenAI's token-based Enterprise rate card lists it at $15 per million input tokens, $1.50 cached input and $75 output, three times the price of GPT-5.5 Rosalind Research.

Key Takeaways

  • Approved orgs only: both the organization and the user need Rosalind Research approval, and Discovery approval does not include it
  • Where to use it: the model picker in ChatGPT Work and Codex, not the Chat tab; in Codex it pairs with the Life Sciences Research plugin
  • API model name gpt-6-rosalind needs separate approval and is limited to internal research tools, not customer-facing products
  • Priced at $15 input, $1.50 cached input and $75 output per million tokens, versus $5/$0.50/$25 for GPT-5.5 Rosalind Research
  • Enterprise workspaces start with a two-week Admin Preview that is off by default until an admin enables it for approved users

GitHub Universe 2026: Copilot Fusion is generally available, routing and orchestrating models automatically, with Fusion Max scoring 60 on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index at about half the cost of Claude Code with Opus 5.5 Max

At GitHub Universe 2026 on Oct 28, GitHub made Copilot Fusion generally available. It merges the multi-model orchestration of the Project HydraFusion research preview with Copilot auto model selection: users pick Copilot Fusion and an effort level (Standard, High or Max) in the model picker, and the system decides which models to use and whether to run a Single, Cascade or Critique workflow. GitHub says Fusion Max scored 60 on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, two points below Claude Code with Opus 5.5 Max, at about half the API cost per task, about half the tokens and about 40% less time. Each underlying model is billed at its standard rate, and paid plans get 30% off through Nov 30.

GitHub Universe 2026: Copilot Fusion is generally available, routing and orchestrating models automatically, with Fusion Max scoring 60 on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index at about half the cost of Claude Code with Opus 5.5 Max

Key Takeaways

  • Scores (Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index v2.0): Fusion Max 60 versus 62 for Claude Code with Opus 5.5 Max; $5.59 per task versus $11.42, while the Devin Fusion pairing scores 62 at $8.00
  • Breakdown: a slight lead on Terminal-Bench 4.0 at 71, third on FrontierCode at 51 (Claude Code 56, Devin Fusion 54), and a weaker 57 on SWE-Atlas-QnA-AA
  • Efficiency: about 7.2M tokens per task, roughly half of Claude Code with Opus 5.5 and 30% fewer than Devin Fusion; GitHub reports about 40% less time per task
  • The pool includes Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5, GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Sol; admins can disable individual models for Fusion only and set Fusion as the default
  • Availability: all Copilot plans in VS Code, the Copilot app, Copilot CLI and JetBrains IDEs; existing auto, HydraFusion and HydraFusion Max selections migrate to matching effort levels

Nano Banana 2.1 silent Flow sighting later confirmed by Google's official GA

On 2026-10-05 community screenshots and first-hand checks showed Nano Banana 2.1 already selectable in the Google Flow model picker — a silent product-side rollout with no Google announcement yet. Google then officially shipped it on 2026-10-06 and marked it GA in the Gemini API as gemini-nano-banana-2.1. Full specs, pricing (about half the prior 1K/2K per-image rates), and human-eval Elo 1050 are in our official GA brief: [Google officially ships Nano Banana 2.1](/news/news-20261007-google-nano-banana-2-1-ga-gemini-api-half-price).

Key Takeaways

  • Status update: the silent Flow picker sighting is now confirmed by Google GA — full write-up: [official GA brief](/news/news-20261007-google-nano-banana-2-1-ga-gemini-api-half-price) (API ID gemini-nano-banana-2.1)
  • Official highlights (from the GA brief/docs only — do not invent): ~half prior 1K/2K per-image price; human-eval T2I Elo 1050 (vs Nano Banana 2 at 990 and Pro at 935)
  • Where to try: Google Flow model dropdown still lists Nano Banana 2.1; API / AI Studio use gemini-nano-banana-2.1
  • Migration: old ID gemini-3.1-flash-image is deprecated (no shutdown date yet); see model docs
  • Early evidence: thtbee_ Flow screenshot showed Pro / 2 Lite / 2.1 side by side
