Anthropic guide: fold most subagents back into one main agent loop with on-demand skills and tools; one customer ran about 2x faster
On 2026-10-22, Anthropic's Applied AI team published "Building agents: When to fold subagents into your main agent loop" on claude.com, along with an open-source reference implementation, anthropics/single-agent-loop-kit. The article says that across several enterprise deployments, a single agent with skills frequently beat both the one-big-prompt design and the subagent design on quality, often at lower cost and latency per task; one customer that swapped its multi-agent harness for a single loop saw roughly 2x faster runtime. Anthropic also says it cut Claude Code's system prompt for more advanced models by over 80%. Subagents still make sense in three cases: measurable context bloat, parallel tasks with disposable context, or trouble selecting tools and conflicting instructions. The piece has drawn wide discussion on X over the past two days.

GitHub Next Releases PDD Kit: Provable Specification Enforcement for Coding Agents to Eliminate Edge-Case Regressions
GitHub Next officially released PDD Kit (Property-Driven Development Kit), establishing a formal verification toolkit tailored for autonomous coding agents. Addressing the pervasive reliability gap where agent-generated code passes isolated unit tests but crashes on subtle edge cases, PDD Kit combines property-driven specifications with automated formal solvers. Instead of testing arbitrary sample inputs, PDD Kit mathematically proves that agent code adheres to rigorous invariant specifications across every possible input, preventing regressions and elevating coding agents from probabilistic generation to provable correctness.

RunningTab: KAIST Overcomes Coding Agent Context Drift via Environment-Side Tabs for Direct Workspace Interaction
In software engineering and knowledge-work tasks, autonomous coding agents operate via Direct Workspace Interaction (DWI)—issuing shell commands to navigate, inspect, and modify files within local repositories without external vector indexing. However, during extended interaction horizons, agents suffer severe context degradation: initial task requirements are purged from context windows by voluminous file dumps, read file provenances vanish, and listed but unopened candidate files are permanently forgotten, leading to premature task terminations and unfulfilled requirements. Researchers from KAIST introduce RunningTab (arXiv:2610.10444), an innovative agent interaction framework that replaces unreliable internal agent scratchpads with an environment-maintained 'running tab'. The tab persists three critical streams: dynamic requirement trackers, verified file excerpts with provenance links, and unopened candidate file stacks. When an agent attempts to finalize a deliverable, the environment triggers a mandatory 'Finish Check' barrier that blocks completion if unsatisfied criteria persist. Evaluated across Workspace-Bench, TheAgentCompany, and OfficeQA Pro benchmarks using frontier LLMs, RunningTab decisively outperforms vanilla DWI and self-refine baselines, establishing substantial gains in rubric satisfaction (TCR@70).
